One of the largest social media platforms to date is Instagram.

Joining instagram can be as easy as going on your mobile phone, signing up, and taking photos to show to the world, but if you have a little bit of time and some extra devices, you can go above and beyond your normal “instagramming” steps.

It is not only fun to use, but it can be a powerful tool for marketing when used correctly. In this tutorial you will learn how to use Instagram like a boss by taking photos with your DSLR camera and posting them on to instagram creating a more in-depth experience to your followers as they view your photos.

*I will be using the iPad and SD card, although there are other ways to do the same thing through other devices. First let me go over what you will need:

1. An SD Card

You will need an SD to transfer photos from your DSLR camera to your device.

2. SD Card Reader for iPad.

I am using the iPad 3 which has the older ports, but you can do the same with the new reader.

 3. A DSLR Camera and a 35mm 1.8/50mm 1.8 Lens

Any DSLR camera will do, but what really helps is a lens that candle handle low light and creates great depth of field. In this case I am using a Nikon D90 and a 35mm Lens.

4. A Tablet that reads SD format.

You will need a device that you will transfer your photos to via your SD card. In this example I am using an iPad 3.

Now we have what we need. I will now be going over the steps to add the photos to your instagram account once you have taken your photos.

Step 1. Plug in your SD card and Reader to your iPad

Most other devices might have an SD card slot which you can insert.

Step 2: Choose your photos app.

Step 3: Choose “import” at bottom of screen.

Step 4: Choose your photos to import to device.

You have the option to choose multiple photos at once.

Step 5: Import Selected photos

At the top right corner you will see a navigation choice labeled “IMPORT”. It will then drop down and give you the choice to import selected photos or all. I would advise to just import selected photos. After that it will prompt you to keep or delete the photos selected.

Step 6: Open your Instagram app and select post

Step 7: Choose your album

This one is trick because it will show you a bunch of photos already on your device, but if you do not drag down you will not see the selection for your albums.

Step 8: Select “All Imported”

You will now see all the imported photos that you selected earlier. Here you can see my beautiful daughter’s photo that I imported earlier.

Step 9: Choose your photo and crop

Here you can see a photo I took earlier of my dining room table as we get ready for the holidays.

Step 10: Add your filter

Be careful with your filters. If you’re using a DSLR with the lenses I suggested you shouldn’t have to add to much faux blur, contrast, or color filters.

Step 11: Connect and share

Choose your photo and connect your other social media accounts to it. Add your description and hashtags and you’re now ready to share.

Step 12: Watch your likes and comments, and interact with your followers.

success It’s a rewarding feeling to share something more than picture taken with your phone. People will appreciate the time you put into taking great photos and sharing it with them.

Happy Instagramming!
